Analysis:
I chose to make a tour of how/where blue jeans are made, specifically Levi Strauss blue jeans. Blue jeans seemed like a simple enough product that the tour would not have too many stops, but also had enough little details that would fulfill my requirements. Also, millions of people all over the world wear blue jeans every day and yet I have no clue how they are made or where they come from, so I thought it would be interesting to find out. In order to make the tour I used Google Earth, and following your instructions, pin-pointed the places that were involved in the making of my product. Then, once I had saved all 5 locations, I created a tour.
There are many site and situation factors that influence the selection of components to blue jeans. The two key factors are inexpensive labor and supply of resources. Levi Strauss is able to get copper, cotton, indigo, etc. from LDC's for much less money than they would be able to if they got it form the U.S. People in LDCs are willing to accept much smaller pay because a little goes a long way for some. As for resources, its the law of supply and demand. The places Levi gets their supplies from has a large supply of whatever it is they are exporting. Since it's so easily accessible, they can't charge as much for it, making it more desirable for U.S. businesses.
Levi Strauss & Co. has many different factory locations, none of which are in the U.S. Many are located in Buenos Aires. Even though the factory location is not in close proximity to any of the suppliers or to the U.S., where most sales are made, it is still very inexpensive. Most of the materials that go into making jeans are bulk-reducing products. This means that the products are easily shipped to the factory and then to the U.S. with low cost. In places like Buenos Aires, labor is very cheap so in order to reduce manufacturing costs, it makes sense for Levi's to put their factory there. Land is also inexpensive in Buenos Aires so it easy to build large factories there for less money than in other places.
Google Earth is often used for recreational purposes but it can also be very practical. Google Earth is a type of GIS map. Therefore it has many layers and much information to offer. This could be helpful to large corporations when trying to decided where to put their next factory, restaurant, law firm, etc. You can, with the click of a button, look at the terrain of an area or see where factories or stores similar to yours are located to determine situation.
